Looking Good...

I know it's not the focus, but the drums and the bass at the beginning feels off. I'm assuming their midi? :)

They're overpowering the solo itself (at least on my setup), but thats all I can pick on. good job. :)

tal-52 responds:

ya they are midi(wish i could find some people that live close to me that can actually play). ya the drums kinda overpower but i really just wanted to see people's opinion on the solo itself. thank you for giving you opinion on the solo, it helps me improve.

I can't see why this is scored so low...

Beautifully done. I'd bow down to you but I've put my back out. :P

Only reason it's not getting a ten is a slight hiccup in the looping. Shouldn't be a problem for a short cut scene, but for anything longer those pauses when a song loops get annoying.

Wolfguard responds:

yeah sorry i didnt mean too set it as a loop... ill definitly fix that up.

Good sound

You probably want to try and work in some key changes or tempo changes. It helps to break up a piece and keep the listener interested, as well as giving you more to work with.

Havik99 responds:

Thanks for the advice.

Needs work.

Its a good intro, but the track just feels flat - there's no real development and the constant volume ramp on the drum loop gets irritating quickly.

I almost thought it was going to break into dance when the the key changed, but nothing happened. :/

Gravelcore responds:

thanks for the review ill take this in mind for future songs ... this is only my 2nd song ever lol

Sweet

Definetly worth finishing up.

I can't really suggest much, given that D'n'B's not a style I've got much experience with, but this loaded up at the same time as G-Sisters (also on the new submissions list), and the two worked so well together during the intro I didn't realise it was two different tracks at first. o_O;

alextheDJ responds:

lol that's cool! I love coincidences like that

Thanks for the review! :)

Heh...

We all get voted down. There's a group that just vote zero on everything on the submissions list, and it's hit and miss (normally hit :/) wether you get caught or not. If you've got enough *real* people looking at your work, score'll pull itself back up when they stick their heads in anyway.

So far as the music goes, its not bad, but there's some nasty clipping on that. Dunno if it's intentional, I know that some artists in this style do that on purpose.

If its not intentional, just turning the volume levels down a couple of dB before exporting should fix it up. You can then go and use Audacity or something similar to turn it up as fas as it can be without the clips. If you're using decent speakers (or wireless headphones, like me), it'll sound a lot better for it.

Fahizzle responds:

yeah ill try it on the next song, im still pretty new to making beats in fruity loops and thanks i will keep that in mind when im working on my next song

*covers ears*

The lead is too insistent, and the short loop doesnt help it any. Remember that outside is where people will spend a good deal of their time, so a short, loud loop gets annoying quickly. See the gold saucer for an example.

You'd probably be better off with a slower track or an ambient track for 'outside', and use this as a quick and dirty loop for motion cutscenes, where it's not likely to loop more than once.

Speaking of loops, the rythem loops perfectly, but the strings feel like they're cut prematurely. I keep runnign into that myself, haven't found an answer yet. :/

BriGuy92 responds:

Thanks for your input. The loop isn't exactly right, simply because the song is actually a MOD, so it loops to a different point in-game. Unfortunately, you can't do that with an mp3. Oh how I would love it if you could. I agree with you that the lead is a bit too loud. I'll change that soon enough. As for your comment that it's not appropriate for an outdoor track, I have two answers. One is that the game is similar to Cave Story, in that there are several distinct "areas". There may end up being more than one outdoor area, but this will only be used for one. My second answer is that I am attempting to model the game's music off of Cave Story, in that the music is of an "active" style at all times aside from cutscenes, and Metroid, in that it is somewhat, if not totally, unconventional. Also keep in mind that this is merely a beta, and that this song in particular will most likely be expanded, perhaps another 30 seconds or so.

Maybe this song shouldn't be listed as a loop, because the loop is not exactly what it is "supposed" to be. At any rate, thank you for your response, and it will sound better eventually. :P

The sounds not actually that bad...

considering that my mic just seems to pick fan noise and nothing else, that's pretty impressive for an builtin mic. Wether it's the retouching or not, it certainly shows you'll be able to get results. :)

GronmonSE responds:

Yeah, I've had mics like that. I was surprised at the quality of the in-built mic to be honest.

Thanks for the comment :D

Doesn't work...

This sounds like the sort of stuff I've been writing lately. :3

The harshest problem is repetition - ie, the fact this is essentially the same 2 bars repeating over and over. Changing the instrumentation alone isn't really enough to break a piece up, so it gets boring quickly. I know I tend to fall into this trap myself, there's a couple of peices I haven't put up for exactly that reason.

Best way I've found to avoid falling into that trap is to put a hard limit on yourself. For example, if I've got the same part playing for more than 16 bars I'll cut it at 16 and try something different. A lot ends up on the cutting room floor so to speak, but it helps in the long wrong.

The other problems are easier to fix, but easier to get wrong in the first place.

The balance is off - where the piano is panned all the way to the left, there's nothing much to balance it back out on the right which makes the whole piece feel lopsided. Those of us that like their headphones will notice that one more.

There's also some clipping on the bass drum.

Long story short : it needs work.

On the positive side : I can see where you're trying to go with this. The floating fortress levels and bowsers castle from SMB3 come to mind the most. Keep at it, and see where you go. :D

homelessandhungry responds:

Yeah I know that this isn't the perfect tune. But I got inspired to do this from Bleach. There is this tune that it isn't in neither one of the two ost cd's and I got kinda pissed and wanted to make something with a similar melody.

I'm not really familiar with this style of music..

...but it would probably work a little better with a shorter intro - just lopping off the first two repetitions would do it.

I know that I thought it was just going to repeat that first bit over and over, so was about to hit stop and move on to something else.

It's tough for me to say much more than that. :D

Rawmin responds:

Thanks for the review, and keep in mind that this isnt the intro, because this is just a section of a track that Im working on. Its nowhere near being done
